Virgin Atlantic has launched it's Gold Standard Carbon Offset Scheme which will allow passengers to offset their travel either online or in-flight.
The airline will calculate the exact amount of carbon produced for each flight and then equate how much each passenger should pay. They will take into account the differing weights of the seats and equipment and also the amount of cargo transported.
This means that passengers will pay more dependant on the class that they fly with Upper Class paying more that Economy passengers.
The scheme is endorsed by 49 non-governmental organisations worldwide and supports renewable energy or energy efficieny technologies - no tree planting or gas flaring.
The airlines target is to improve it's fuel effciency by 30% by 2020.
