Will there be fundamental changes in tourism in the future?

28th November 2007

Yes there will.....well according to the latest UN IPCC climate change report anyway.

There are many areas at risk, in particular:

  • the Artic - due to high rates of warming on natural systems and human communities
  • Africa - due to climate change impacts
  • small islands - due to climate change impacts
  • Asian and African megadeltas - due to high exposure to sea level rise, storm surges and river flooding.

There are also some startling predictions contained in the report, namely:

  • Africa - by 2020 75>250m people at risk of water related climate change impacts. By the end of the century coastal areas will be affected by sea water rises.
  • Asia - by 2050 coastal areas will be prone to flooding and the amount of freshwater will decrease.
  • Australia and New Zealand - by 2020 a loss of biodiversity (including the Great Barrier Reef) and coastal flooding by the 2050's.
  • Europe - sea level rises; increased stormy conditions; retreating glaciers; very, very hot and drought conditions in southern Europe.
  • Latin America - replacement of rain forest with savannah by the 2050's; increased risk of starvation amongst population.
  • North America - increased heatwaves; coastal areas impacted by pollution and climate change.
  • Polar Regions - increased threat to the already vulnerable ecosystems.

All that said the report is broadly optimistic about mitigating the global warming threats as long as we can continue to treat the threat of global warming as an iminant threat and take measures to reduce the impact.
