Porritt's Predictions for the Future

11th December 2007

Jonathon Porritt, a leading environmentalist, founder of the 'Forum for the Future' and a former director of Friends of the Earth has attributed some of the damage being caused to the climate to the huge growth in population seen over the last 50 years.

He predicts that the Mediterranean beach holiday will be a thing of the past by 2030 and that European skiing is in a terminal decline.

He has also pointed out that 30 per cent of coral reefs are already badly damaged.

He claimed that, in general, people acted irresponsibly on holiday, claiming the average tourist in Spain used 880 litres of water a day, compared to 250 litres used by a city dweller.

He fully supported offsetting of carbon emissions and said that business and travellers alike need to start thinking about the environment whenever they plan their travels.
