  • Thomas Cook to slash thousands of jobs

    U.K. travel organisation Thomas Cook plans to chop approximately 2,500 jobs and shut down 195 retail travel agencies.

    The job cuts would amount to a 16% reduction in Thomas Cook’s 15,500-person workforce.

    “It isn’t easy to make decisions that impact directly on our people, but we also owe it to our customers to shape the business effectively and confirm that after they book their holiday with us, our administrative costs are as little as possible,” said Thomas Cook CEO Peter Fankhauser.

    “Even after these changes, we can still have among the many largest retail networks in U.K. travel.”

  • TCA launches Abu Dhabi Convention Bureau

    The Authority has launched a brand new force to drive its business events ambitions forward because it looks for the emirate to be ranked by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) as among the many world’s top 50 association meetings destinations in five years.

    Abu Dhabi Convention Bureau – a brand new dedicated, one-stop-support-shop inside the Authority – will assist the expansion of exhibitions and conferences in the emirate by forging closer links with the industry and providing financial and non-financial support.

    The bureau will provide a number of services to the industry including bid presentation support, delegate generation campaigns, local stakeholder co-ordination and data, on-site destination advice, government support co-ordination and marketing assistance.

  • Cape Town Tourism within the spotlight at ITB

    December 2012 marked the only billionth international tourism arrival globally and competition between destinations is more fierce than ever. Staying relevant by maintaining with future trends is a key focus at this year’s ITB tourism trade exhibition in Berlin, set to attract some 170,000 visitors between March 6-10, 2013. As in previous years, Cape Town Tourism and Wesgro are representing the region’s tourism industry at ITB.
