  • Autograph Collection set to debut in Germany

    Autograph Collection will debut in Germany later this year with the hole of the 87-room Hotel am Steinplatz in Berlin.  Celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, the historic icon will re-open following an intensive renovation after first opening as a hotel in 1913. 

    Hotel am Steinplatz joins multiple Autograph Collection properties currently scheduled to open in Europe this year, helping expand the collection’s current portfolio to 15 hotels in Europe and greater than 40 hotels worldwide.

    “We are thrilled that the historic Hotel am Steinplatz is joining Autograph Collection, marking the collection’s debut within the German market,” explains Amy McPherson, president and managing director for Marriott International in Europe.

    The boutique property, uniquely located within walking distance of West Berlin’s main attractions, offers 84 stunning guestrooms, three suites, restaurant, and classy lobby lounge & bar.  Other features include a spa, fitness room and meeting space.

    With the unique building having first opened its doors in 1907, Hotel am Steinplatz has an attractive history as an exclusive meeting point for artists, writers, philosophers or even aristocracy.  It was designed by renowned architect, August Endell, who also designed the famous Hackesche Hoefe in Berlin.  With its heritage listed façade and wonderfully recreated interior, the hotel offers a potent mixture of historical charm and modern sophistication, making it a main destination in Germany’s historic capital.

  • News: Unprecedented 5.7% rise in visitors from UK to Germany

    Destination Germany remains heading in the right direction for fulfillment, with excellent growth within the volume of overnight stays by international visitors providing much of the momentum. In 2012 the German Federal Statistical Office recorded in way over 68.8 million overnight stays by visitors from abroad in accommodation establishments with greater than ten beds, a rise of around 8 per cent at the previous year. “We have exceeded, by a transparent margin, the forecast volume of 400 million overnight stays from Germany and abroad. This emphatically underlines the large acclaim for Destination Germany, that is becoming increasingly attractive to people from other countries,” says Ernst Burgbacher, Member of the German Parliament, Parliamentary State Secretary on the Federal Ministry for Economics and Technology and Federal Government Commissioner for SMEs and Tourism.

    Europe and the BRIC countries go from strength to strength

    The German Federal Statistical Office recorded a complete of 68.8 million overnight stays by visitors from abroad in 2012, up 8 per cent at the previous year.  The united kingdom market (visitors from the united kingdom to Germany) alone rose by 5.7%. “The European source markets and the BRIC countries are going from strength to strength and so they have played an incredible role on this new record result for inbound tourism in Germany. If the most source markets continue to accomplish strongly, we can be on course to pass the 80 million mark in international overnight stays by 2020,” says Petra Hedorfer, Chief Executive Officer of the German National Tourist Board (GNTB). In accordance with a UNWTO survey, growth in inbound tourism for Destination Germany remains well above the worldwide and European average.

  • News: ITB Berlin 2013: CLIA expands with national organisation in Germany

    Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) today announced the establishment of CLIA Germany on the world’s biggest tourism fair ITB Berlin 2013. The hot national association can be headquartered in Hamburg and can be chaired by Michael Ungerer, CEO of AIDA Cruises. This follows CLIA’s Jan. 30 announcement of its expanded resources in Europe with CLIA Germany joining CLIA UK and Ireland and CLIA Netherlands as part of CLIA’s newly established global structure.

    “The establishment of CLIA Germany further expands our presence in Europe, probably the most important markets for the worldwide cruise industry,” said Christine Duffy, president and CEO of CLIA. “With a significantly enhanced presence in Europe the cruise industry hasn’t ever been better positioned to talk with one global voice.”

    “We are very happy to announce the establishment of CLIA Germany as portion of CLIA’s new worldwide structure,” said Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio, Chairman of CLIA Europe, in his keynote speech which introduced ITB’s Cruise Panel. “With the establishment of a German national association, the cruise industry can better support its members locally and confirm they make the most of CLIA’s global programs within the second largest cruise market in Europe, one that has experienced substantial growth in recent times with the choice of passengers growing from 1.2 million in 2010 to at least one.4 million in 2011, a year-over-year increase of nearly 14 percent.”

    CLIA Germany’s Leadership Council shall be led by Ungerer, Michael Zengerle, Managing Director of MSC Cruises Germany as Vice president, and Helge Grammerstorf, Managing Director of SeaConsult, as National Director. As a part of CLIA’s unified structure, along side German cruise lines, all relevant European regional and global association members may have membership on CLIA Germany’s Leadership Council. Additionally, ex-officio seats could be provided to German Travel Association, German Shipowners Association, and the CLIA Europe Secretary General.

    CLIA Germany can be focusing extensive energies on strengthening its relationships with the travel agent community and the German Travel Association. Given this emphasis, Richard Vogel, CEO of TUI Cruises, who also serves as chairman of the German Travel Association’s Cruise Section, could be the cruise industry’s primary liaison to the travel agent community.
