The joint campaign, to be launched later this year, aims to elevate awareness among international tourists concerning the sorts of illicit goods and services to which they can be exposed during their travels and which directly or indirectly fund organized crime groups. Travellers can play a key role in reducing demand for these products through ethical consumer choices. With greater than 1 billion tourists now crossing international borders per annum, there’s a growing opportunity to name on tourists to behave and decrease demand for these illicit products which in lots of cases are providing a funding source for organized crime. The campaign drives the message that while some products could appear harmless, the demand created and their sale can, on the contrary, have devastating effects at the lives of innocent people, on wildlife or on cultural property. The billions of greenbacks generated through such trade also fund criminal groups who use this money to branch out into other illicit and unethical lines of industrial.

“Although the infrastructure of tourism – from accommodation establishments to transportation networks – may be misused by traffickers to victimize the vulnerable, tourism has the prospective and is firmly committed to reclaim this same infrastructure and use it inside the fight against trafficking” said UNWTO’s Secretary-General Taleb Rifai. “Through coordinated efforts, we will be sure awareness travels – that tourism authorities, travel companies and tourists join us in this fight” he added.

According to the manager Director of UNODC, Yury Fedotov: “This new awareness-raising campaign can assist build awareness about organized crime and the devastating effect it has on people and communities worldwide. Tourists are usually exposed to the traffickers of people and unethical products. By making informed choices, tourists may help sever the financial arteries that fuel these types of illicit trade”.

The campaign will seek to interact the tourism industry including hotel chains, travel agencies and airlines to lend support in raising awareness among tourists and help contribute to limiting these illicit markets.

The initiative supplements UNWTO’s Global Code of Ethics for Tourism. InterContinental Hotels Group has begun adding its entire portfolio of four,600 properties world wide to China travel retailer Ctrip.com International via a reservations system connection designed and implemented by DerbySoft.

“We are happy to have a successful reference to IHG through DerbySoft, and Chinese customers can easily reserve more global hotels through Ctrip,” said Maria Maohua Sun, Ctrip’s Senior Vice chairman and Head of Hotel Business Division. Online travel bookings in China overall are expected to arrive nearly $14.4 billion this year, in step with PhocusWright.

“Having worked with DerbySoft since 2007 on numerous technology projects, we were extremely confident of their ability to assist us with this complex direct connection,” said IHG Vp of Distribution and Intermediary Sales Andrew Rubinacci. DerbySoft was the primary technology provider to attach a world hotel company’s CRS to Booking.com, the Amsterdam-based division of Priceline.com Inc. (PCLN), when it connected IHG to Booking.com in 2008.

The XML-based connection between IHG and Ctrip, facilitated by DerbySoft, went live this week. Over a better several weeks, DerbySoft will continue rolling out IHG’s 4,600 properties onto the Ctrip system. “We are proud to have created this new reservations connection between these two major industry players,” said DerbySoft Vice chairman of Connectivity Keith Cotton. “Our distributed technology platform, which gives extremely flexible and unique solutions to deal with different business rules of both partners, includes servers strategically positioned all over the world to supply reduced latency and exceptional system response times for both Ctrip and IHG..”
